The History of Cake Pops

One of the perks of living in a food-centered society is always having something new and delicious to eat, and if that food happens to be a dessert, even better! Some of the greatest culinary works of art are desserts. Chefs and home cooks alike take pride in satisfying people’s sweet tooth with innovative desserts that focus on presentation as much as flavor. One of the most recent of these sweet works of art to explode on the market is the cake pop. The youthful whimsy of a lollipop and the sophistication of specialty cake flavors make for a fun and delicious, yet classy, dessert for anyone to enjoy on just about any occasion. But how did cake pops come about?
Donut Holes and Cake Balls, Oh My!

The concept of a ball of sweet cake is actually not new. Donut holes, though the cake itself is only one or two basic flavors, come in yummy round balls glazed or coated with sweet toppings like chocolate glaze or cinnamon and sugar crumb. These, however, have pretty much stayed in the “breakfast pastry” realm of desserts with only a basic, but perfectly acceptable, quality of presentation and have never really moved beyond that category. But this is why a donut hole is a donut hole, and we love them just the way they are. This brings us to cake balls. Again, cake balls, like donut holes, are actually not a new concept, though the purpose of the cake ball then and now have changed. There is little to define the exact when and where of the cake ball’s origin, but there is one thing that is clear: the original purpose of the cake ball was to use leftover cake. The leftover, and potentially stale, cake would be crumbed and rolled into balls with icing or some other binding ingredient, which makes it denser and typically sweeter than normal cake, and then coated with chocolate or other sweet exterior. Then, voilà! You saved the original cake by making it into something new!
Popularization of Cake Pops

Cake balls became so popular that bakers began making them from the start, no waiting for the right time to revive last week’s birthday cake. This then led to the stroke of genius that made cake balls into the cake pops that we know and love: why not put a cake ball on a stick! Cake pops have been popping up all over, from online stores like Amazon, to bakeries, coffee shops, and home kitchens. And, thanks in large part to the generous creativity of the cake pop queen herself, Bakerella, who really put the spotlight on the artistic potential of cake pops, they have become today’s go-to dessert, whether you want one for an afternoon treat, for your kid’s birthday party, for your next corporate event, or even for your wedding. Their versatility makes them perfect for any occasion. Just make sure you have enough to go around!

The History of Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Chocolate has been enjoyed as a special treat as far back as 1100 BC. It has been reported that the Aztec and Mayan civilizations enjoyed chocolate as a beverage and even used cocoa beans as currency. As cocoa spread around the world different versions emerged. Candy makers added milk and sugar to create a creamy variety, others added nuts and caramel to create stick treats. Today there is a chocolate out there sure to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.

Just like chocolate, strawberries have a long & rich history. They were found growing wild in Italy as early as 234 BC. Even Native American tribes cultivated the aromatic fruit from as early as the 1600’s.  The name itself has some myth around it as well.  From the idea that people put straw around the base of the plant for both nutrients & protection, from the runners (vines) of the plant that “strew” (spread) about.  Many people love strawberries because of their sweet taste and desirable smell and for centuries has been a favorite centerpiece or garnish if desserts & salads.

Although both chocolate and strawberries have been around for a long time, it was not until a woman named Lorraine Lorusso combined the two in the 1960s that the decadent chocolate covered strawberry was created. Lorraine worked at a small gourmet store called the Stop N’ Shop in Chicago. She took a tempered version of the gourmet chocolate served in the store and dipped the seasons’ freshest berries into the mixture. She allowed the chocolate to harden and then served them to paying customers. The treat was an instant success.

Since then fruit and chocolate have been seen as the perfect pair. You can now find all types of fruit, both fresh and dried, covered in chocolate.

Valentine’s Day is Just Around the Corner!

The holiday season isn’t over yet, in fact a certain day celebrating love is just around the corner! It’s a great time to show the people in your life how much you care about them. Which is what Valentine’s Day is all about! But how did Valentine’s Day become a holiday celebrating love? And when did Valentine’s Day start?

Valentine’s Day actually started with the Romans as a fertility festival, Lupracalia. Lupracalia occurred on February 13thand isn’t the traditional Valentine’s Day that we think of, but rather one that celebrated couples coming together and eventually getting married. Overtime, this tradition changed with the influence of Christianity and different Saint Valentine’s contributing to the story of what we know to be Valentine’s Day. The Valentines all have a few things in common: they were all Christians who lived during the Roman period when Christians were being persecuted, and they were all martyred. One of these St. Valentine’s was actually imprisoned when he supposedly fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. The woman would come and take care of him each day and overtime they fell in love. It is this Valentine that may have coined the term “From Your Valentine”. This is because it is believed that this particular Valentine wrote a letter to the young woman signed “From Your Valentine.” Making his letter technically the first Valentine in history.

The Valentine’s Day we know and love sure has changed a lot over the years! But one thing is for sure: it is a fun holiday meant to show just how much you appreciate the people in your life. In fact, Valentine’s Day is the second biggest holiday in which people send out cards! But you know what else people give out on Valentine’s Day? Chocolate! Chocolate actually wasn’t apart of Valentine’s Day celebrations until the 1840s. This is when Richard Cadbury marketed his new chocolate recipe to the masses. Chocolate had already been popularized, but was found to be too bitter by the public, and so Cadbury’s recipe promised to be sweeter and less bitter. So what’s with Valentine’s Day? Well, Cadbury centered his marketing campaign around the holiday and ever since then chocolate and Valentine’s Day have gone together with modern day chocolates and candies shaped like hearts.
